Waterfalls of the Carolinas and Photographing Wild Water

Join acclaimed outdoor and nature photographer, Richard Bernabe, for a series of photography workshops that instruct how to capture the waterfalls of North and South Carolina with a variety of techniques in a variety of light and conditions. The specific waterfalls and locations visited will depend on the weather, light and water flow conditions. Here is the current schedule for this series of photo workshops:

waterfalls of the Carolinas This series of workshops are designed as instructional sessions for digital photographers. Proper exposure using the camera's histogram, composition, white balance, experimenting with various shutter speeds to acheive an illusion of motion, reflections, polarizing and neutral density filters are all topics and concepts to be covered. After taking one of these sessions, you will be able to photograph waterfalls and moving water like a pro.

You will also learn to use and evaluate natural light in order to get accurate exposures and bold, saturated colors. Working with harsh midday sunlight, shade, and overcast conditions all present both opportunities and frustrations for beginning and experienced photographers. After one of these sessions, you will know what to do in each of these situations as well as what not to do. Beginning photographers and those switching from film to digital will gain valuable insight into how the camera's imaging sensor handles bright highlights from white water as well as the shadows. Getting the proper exposure will never be a guessing game again!

A digital SLR is preferred, but a point-and-shoot digital camera with manual control over exposure will also suffice. A sturdy tripod is essential, however. Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots or shoes are always a good idea, even though no long, strenuous hiking is involved. Bringing rain gear is also a good idea, considering the unpredictable nature of mountain weather during the months of spring and summer.

The meeting place will be Hendersonville, North Carolina with local excursions to nearby Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest, locations along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the upstate of South Carolina. Exact locations will be chosen based on the current conditions and weather.
